Hey it's the 6th Birthday of The Round in Seattle. wow! I remember thinking way back then, "if we put a # on it, maybe we'll be able to keep it going?". And here we are... 6 years later, at Round # 73. And still just across the street from where it all began at the Living:Room tea house with an informal songwriter workshop turned "in the round" session.

Next we added the potluck dinner before the show, then live painters around #3 and slam poets began at #9. Podcast launched from #13 onward and while we missed a few there are some amazing recordings online for FREE. So many great volunteers and supporters have kept this show going, so thank you everyone! A special shout out to the early early supporters such as Tara Ward, Scott Erickson, Denise Jolly, Vic Brown, Liz Leahy, Joshua Sherman, and I'm sure many more I'm forgetting. Also thanks to Jonas G who's been doing live sound for us for years and also mixes and posts the podcast. He did the difficult math to determine it's our 6th birthday this month!

Hello friends, I hope you are all doing well and enjoying some crisp Fall weather wherever you are! Don't get blown away tonight! wow.

Well, I've been meaning to send a more personal invitation to you about this momentous occasion, but have gotten a bit behind on emails lately so I just want to get this out to you now that it's only a few days away! oops. [This is a rare rare note to my personal email contacts only though. Don't worry, you are not being added to any email lists or anything like that.]

And by baby, I mean a growing nonprofit community Arts Center I helped birth in 2005. And we just got exciting news that the Abbey was awarded a "BEST OF 2010" FROM SEATTLE MAGAZINE!

Yes, we call her Abbey, or Fremont Abbey. :-) She's an old 1914 church building that was re-incarnated into a non-religious Arts Center in 2005...then underwent an amazing facelift and reawakened in 2008. It's really been quite a journey and we are now in a place of great potential to impact more people in Seattle and also actually be a model for other community based arts education & community building projects around the world (my new design consulting site/survival guide at http://www.lonelybuildings.com is going live next month!)

Anyway, I'm not very good at asking... but my Board keeps encouraging me to just say it... so yes, we really need your support (ie. birthday gifts!) to get her to a more sustainable age of 6 and 7 years old. Abbey has actually grown through the recession and has developed into an amazing community space where people of all ages & incomes are supported in artistic & community building interactions on a daily basis (approx 15,000 impacts in 2008 and expecting about 25,000 this year).

So you've probably seen a lot of nonprofits lately asking for you to give gifts this year that support the poor. I'm all for this. But I think it's also still totally fine to give a normal gift to loved ones! The point of 'enlightened sustainable giving' and stopping rampant consumerism is to help ourselves and others live better lives.

But let's face it, that doesn't work if you cut out the joy in your own life (or friends/family) and the next year say "screw that, I'm going to buy tons of stuff now cause last year I deprived myself". ya know?

so do both... don't go crazy on either side, and I think you'll find this could become a more sustainable habit, not just a one time gimmick.

Jozef Luptak is playing an intimate cello/voice concert in the Great Hall at the Fremont Abbey Arts Center on Sunday October 26th.

His performance last year literally brought tears to my eyes. I met Jozef at an arts conference and saw him perform in a concert hall with a small audience. It was really amazing. He not only plays wonderfully with just cell, but on some songs he also does this haunting singing style and clicking (reminds me of Sigur Ros a bit actually) WHILE PLAYING! Very interesting.

here's an under the radar film festival that's doing a great job bringing important humanitarian films to Seattle. UP THE YANGTZE IS AMAZING. i saw it during SIFF. epic!

FILM FAITH JUSTICE FORUM
is host to the Traveling Human Rights Watch Film Festival, this forum utilizes film, keynote lectures, and discussion panels to engage modern issues of faith and social justice critical to countering modern exploitation and injustice.

The Color of Freedom/Goodbye Bafana. I found this film to be very moving.

It helped me see a bit more clearly how tragically similar some things are even in our current "civilized" world. Such as Guatanamo Bay prison (probably) and the current situation with Human Slavery around the world AND in the "freedom enthused" United States. I highly suggest you watch this quietly, alone, or with a friend. It's very gripping as well, not a documentary type.

While I did happen to watch the film tonight, this roundabout struck me earlier this week as a simple and beautiful example of human goodness and joy. Such valuable items, and completely without reward. The guestbook on the table will bring you a tear.

Please... turn off the news and open your eyes...

I've seen 3 striking things in as many days. Some anonymous soul who trimmed ivy vines on the side of an old warehouse in Bellingham, into the shape of a heart. Some industrious artist in Mt. Vernon who carefully crafted a wooden beach house out of intwertwined branches... then made a big piece symbol out of drift wood on a stake that could be seen from I-5 even. All done on a beach that will no doubt be covered by the river in a month.

What beautiful parts of life have you seen lately?

p.s. as you can see in this night photo that was taken a couple days later, the display only grows. i'm going to walk down and see what it's like tomorrow, i can't wait. (it's just a block east of Greenlake Way around 57th or so on Kenwood Place)

Wow, what a day. I'm currently sitting up in the Bell Tower since thankfully there are no drum lessons up here tonight. I've been relegated to the tower because every single other room is in use right now. It's really beautiful.

i'm going to see the Dalai Lama speak tomorrow as part of the Seeds of Compassion conference. for some reason i'm nervous. it's not like i'm going to meet him or need to know what to say. maybe i'm feeling guilty about not being compassionate enough? i don't know. i guess i've probably never been in the same building as a major world leader.

this music from Bon Iver is helping me calm down though and i HIGHLY recommend you buy the album.

I was honored to lend a couple easels I made for the Fremont Abbey Arts Center to Cloud Cult & kexp for their bbq/show on saturday. After seeing the Lonely Forest for the first time sans
guitar player (he left late last year to attend school), I was so
impressed that I had to immediately gush about them on Line Out—they
have consciously made their new material just as dynamic as before,
even without the oh so important six-string, and as a longtime fan,
that made me very happy. Drummer Braydn Krueger is a machine—one of
the best young drummers in the city (and by "young," I mean under 21).
Singer/keyboardist John Van Deusen's voice can cleanly croon, but he
also gets emotional and cathartic, adding a nice dichotomy to the
beauty of his piano. Get stoked for their upcoming album, Nuclear
Winter—it's a self-described "space rock odyssey into an alternate
dimension," and based on the songs posted on their MySpace page
(www.myspace.com/thelonelyforest), it'll no doubt carve them a nice,
long-standing niche in the local scene as not just an "underage" band,

a friend took me to Benaroya last night to see Damien Rice... beautiful show... had never seen anything in there besides a couple symphonies and this was much louder and more intense. what was interesting though is that the show was an Earth Day thing put on by KMTT (radio) and so midway through the concert Mr. Rice spoke for probably 10 minutes about environmental concerns... he didn't rant and seemed pretty balanced on the "who do we believe" question, which i found refreshing. mostly though he told a story of how he found a paralyzed seagull in Dublin and ended up saving it... it healed... and was released. it was something he did personally. i did find it odd though that he is doing a benefit album with a bunch of friends and still doesn't know yet who the beneficiary will be (just for the Earth is all they've got so far). this just goes to show again that bands & audiences need a lot better help to connect with good non-profits they can trust.

"this is a large-scale protest/simulation of the displacement camps in northern uganda. you may have heard of "global night commute" last year. that event protested situations in northern uganda that were causing thousands of children to commute into cities and sleep cramped into small places in unhealthy conditions. two months after "global night commute" things began to change and now there is virtualy no commuting!
also, we are looking to double or triple our volunteers. we need people to be parking attendants, first aid people, security, people to collect letters written to congress people, sign people in, sound engineers etc. VOLUNTEER - becky tucker (eyeheartseattle@gmail.com)

Joe isn't a Fair Trader?

What? No. It couldn't possibly be.

But, they are strangely deficient of Fair Trade coffees. Strange isn't it?

While trying to escape the U-District Trader Joes in Seattle without spending $100's, I went to grab some coffee beans and it took me literally 1.5 minutes to find the fair trade coffee down on the bottom shelf. There were about 3 or 4 varieties out of the 30+ they have. I looked closely at all the other kinds thinking that maybe ol' Joe has his own Fair Trade system. He doesn't. He simply doesn't stock many fair trade coffees at all and doesn't prioritize them in displays.

This should change.

I spoke with the manager and asked if Trader Joes does in fact care about Fair Trade (since I was pretty sure they did) and she gave the classic & seemingly sincere "oh we are trying to find more fairly traded coffees, yada yada". Granted, she did say they would move them up higher on the shelves, but still. If Trader Joes can't even do a good job of selling a good % of Fair Trade coffees... then what can we expect of Starbucks or other stores!

The good news is that the fair trade coffee was almost sold out tonight. And the other good news is - YOU CAN HELP CHANGE THIS. I think it would be a great statement to show how our voices can change corporate policies.

BlueTree.org is sponsoring a special evening at the Taproot Theatre to support a recently demolished community in Zimbabwe. The situation there is dire and these people need help much more so than the folks in New Orleans who are receiving massive aid from the US Government and non-profit agencies (albeit too slowly).
